Until we get out of this wet season, be sure to turn off your irrigation systems. Plants need alternating periods of moisture and dryness, so oxygen can come back to the root zone. If your plants are getting too much water, expect to see some yellowing of the foliage and perhaps some wilting. This will be self correcting when we do get into a drier season.
If you have lost some of your bedding plants due to excess moisture, most of the hot weather annuals are available in larger sizes. Also, crape myrtles will be in bloom for the next few weeks, and would be a colorful addition to any landscape. Many of the varieties we carry at Southwood were cultivated by Oklahoma State University's Dr. Carl Whitcomb, including the vivid red Dynamite and magenta blooming Raspberry Sundae. Are you looking for help in putting some life and style into your landscape? The first step is totake pictures of the area you want to plant, and jot down some observations about sun exposure and soil conditions (is it more claylike or sandy in consistency). Also, do some thinking about what you really want: Do prefer the look of a traditional and structured English garden, or do you like a relaxed and natural-looking garden? How would you like to use your garden: Do you entertain often? Play outside with your children or pets? Do you want a low maintenence landscape or do you like to get outside and dig in the dirt as often as possible? Even if you come in with only a general idea of what you want your garden to look like and provide for you and your family, it'll help us get you started on your ideal garden!
As always, Southwood employees are always on hand to answer your questions and help you find the perfect addition to your garden. Have a question about a fungus or bug on your favorite plant? Bring a sample of the problem to the store and we'll be happy to offer a diagnosis and cure. With several degreed horticulturists on staff, Southwood has an expert on just about anything!
